Today I wanted to share a story with you about a “wicked” woman I know that taught me a vexatious lesson recently. The lesson was so painful in fact that I cringe even now when I think of it. So bear with me as I share with you the details.
For those of you that don’t know, I’m a senior in college. (A 35 year old senior in college, but a senior all the same). December 13th was the last day of finals and grades were due in the 18th. So this morning I checked my grades hoping and praying for the best. To say the least, I was disappointed. I got four A’s a B+ and a C+. So I got a 3.667. The C+ I’m not concerned about. It was in a topic I’m not strong in anyway (Business Finance). But the B+ Ugh! Are you kidding me?
What class was it you ask? Marketing research. (And just in case you’re wondering, it is NOTHING like the marketing research that you and I do online) So why does a B+ bother me so much? When I share my exact grade with you, you’ll understand. I earned a .898. Read that again. A .898. So in other words I scored 898 points out of 1000. But the real kicker is this…I was only 2 ONE THOUSANDTHS of a point away from an “A”. That’s a tuff pill to swallow! So yea, I was bothered by that. But here’s the rub.
She could have just “given” me those last percentage points and rounded my score up to an “A”. But she didn’t. (I personally think it’s because she’s wicked) But obviously she noticed that somewhere along the way, I wasn’t giving my best. Maybe I didn’t always put my best foot forward or maybe I should have scored better on other assignments, or maybe I was silent when I should have participated. Whatever the case may be, she didn’t feel as though I am an “A” student.
So I got to thinking. What if I would have given just another 2 one thousandths of a percent extra effort in class? What if I would have given 2 one thousandths of a percent extra effort on my homework? What if I would have given 2 one thousandths of a percent extra effort on my final project? That would have made the difference between a “B+” and an “A”.
What about you? What if you would give 2 one thousandths of a percent extra effort in your business? What if you would give 2 one thousandths of a percent extra effort in your list building efforts? What if you would give 2 one thousandths of a percent extra effort in your prospecting? What if you would give 2 one thousandths of a percent extra effort in your relationships, especially your family? What if you would give 2 one thousandths of a percent extra effort in your …fill in the blank.
Sometimes it’s just that last 2 one thousandths of a percent that makes the difference between winning and losing. Sometimes it’s just that last 2 one thousandths of a percent that is the difference between $100,000.00 a year and $50,000.00 a year. Sometimes it’s just that last 2 one thousandths of a percent.
Yea, I’m peeved I didn’t get the “A”. And yea, I still think my marketing research professor is “wicked”. But to tell you the truth, I believe this was a lesson that I needed to learn. And I’m thankful for my “wicked” professor and the painful lesson she taught me. I fully intend to implement this into every facet of my businesses (offline and online). one thousandths of a percent that is the difference between an online business and an online hobby.
So what about you? Are you willing to give an extra 2 one thousandths of a percent? I hope and pray the answer is yes.
Until next time.
