The #1 Reason Christian Businesses Struggle or Fail

When it comes to business success, many Christian business owners seem to have something holding them back. There seems to be some dark force that always persists and gets in the way of a Christian business owner’s success and ultimately plots failure. It sounds counterintuitive. After all, wasn’t your business spirit driven? Aren’t working to help grow God’s kingdom? And don’t you read the Bible every day? So how could you, as a Christian business owner, fail? Well, my friend, it’s simple. It’s because many business owners view “marketing” as a dirty word.

After spending time working with pastors in helping them grow their churches, I realized that Christians so often view marketing as a dirty word. If you view marketing as something that is dirty, and slimy and sleazy, then what are the odds on you ever attracting your ideal customer? I’ll answer that for you. The answer is slim to none. Without marketing directly to your ideal prospect, you’ll never have an ideal customer because people won’t know you exist! If you have a message worth spreading, then by all means spread your message.

Think About The Book of Acts

Consider the apostles from the books of Acts for a moment. Peter and the other apostles began spreading the message of Jesus, no matter the cost. They were jailed, persecuted and ridiculed. Even so, they went from village to village, town to town spreading the gospel. They preached the message of the good news to anyone who would listen. They preached of baptism, repentance and forgiveness. And to all those who listened and believe the message about Jesus, they were baptized for the forgiveness of their sins, adding to the church daily.

In other words, Peter, John and the rest of the apostles (later Paul as well), had an excellent message to spread. They went directly to their prospects and delivered their pitch. And after they were delivered their pitch, there was a direct response. People either accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, or they did not. That, my friend, is direct response marketing; and it was taking place over 2,000 years ago! The apostles were doing as they were commanded. They were spreading God’s word. They were increasing God’s kingdom. And they were committed to reading the scriptures daily. But! Christianity would not be around today if the apostles kept the message to themselves because they thought “marketing” was a dirty word.

If your product or service solves a problem or makes some person’s life easier or better, than you have an obligation to tell everyone about it. According to Webster’s Dictionary, marketing is: “the activities that are involved in making people aware of a company’s products, making sure that the products are available to be bought.” Marketing is simply the act of making people aware of your product or service. That’s it! Yet, so many Christian business owners fail to market, or fail to market their business effectively; thus allowing them to be another statistic of a failed business.

Don’t Hide Your Light, Or Your Talents, Or Your Business

You have a passion for your business, this is true. Yet, in many ways you neglect one of the most important aspects of business; marketing. You were given a gift. God didn’t give you your gift so you can hide it and let it rot. And He didn’t give you the opportunity to start your business just so He could watch you fail. He gave you your gift and your business so you could bless others with them.

But here’s the rub. God will not deliver all your customers to you without any effort on your part. Keep in mind, Adam and Eve were put there to tend to the garden, not just sit in it. The apostles had to put in the work of spreading the message of the good news of Jesus Christ (marketing). And you my friend have to put in the effort in your business and tell as many people about it as possible.

Your business exists to help people. Now, starting today, make it your mission to tell as many people about your business as you can. Start that marketing campaign you’ve been putting off. Write that blog post you’ve been avoiding. And place that advertisement you’ve been too nervous to place. If you need help, there are many people around that’ll be glad to help you.
